2005 Delta State Tennis ArchiveMay 2, 2006 DSU TENNIS SET FOR NCAA REGIONALS VALDOSTA, GA. - After falling in the semi-finals to the in the GSC championship, the Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams get set to square off in the NCAA South Regional Tournaments starting May 4-6. Both teams begin their first round play in Valdosta, GA. The Lady Statesmen had another stellar season ranked 29 th in country while finishing with a 15-6 record. Starting the season off with five straight victories allowed the momentum to compile an 11-1 Gulf South Conference record. Despite being knocked out by eventual champion West Florida in the semi-finals of the GSC championships, the Lady Statesmen did have four members on the All-GSC teams; senior Mindy Salas, juniors Paula Uchida and Helene Thalamy along with freshman Milena Araujo. The Lady Statesmen open the first round against the University of North Alabama. The Statesmen got off to a rocky start to start the season, dropping three straight before getting a victory. Led by junior David Voravongsa, last years GSC West Player of the Year, the Statesmen pushed out an 11-11 record. After knocking out North Alabama, then falling to Valdosta State in the semi-finals in the GSC tournament, the Statesmen placed four on the All-GSC tennis team; senior Benjamin Plongenet, juniors Thomas Pasquet and David Voravongsa along with sophomore Rafael Weigard. The Statesmen open the first round against the University of North AlabamaApril 26, 2006 DSU TENNIS WELL REPRESENTED ON THE ALL-GSC TENNIS TEAMS CLEVELAND - Delta State University senior Mindy Salas, juniors Paula Uchida and Helene Thalamy along with freshman Milena Araujo were named to the 2006 All-Gulf South Conference tennis team on Tuesday. Uchida and Thalamy are first team selections while Salas and Araujo garnished second team honors. Uchida a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil receives her third straight first-team honor. She helped lead the Lady Statesmen to the GSC semi’s, while posting a 13-5 doubles record with partner Salas. Thalamy made the jump to the first team after All-GSC second team honors last season. The Corbigny, France native finished with a stunning 11-4 singles record while guiding the Lady Statesmen to a semi-final birth. Salas, Caracas, Venezuela native, makes her second straight All-GSC second team appearance finishing the season with a 9-6 singles record and 11-5 in doubles action with Uchida. Araujo, freshman from Sao Paulo , Brazil earns her first ever all-GSC second team appearance. She finished the season with a team-high 12-4 singles record while going 14-6 with partner Sophie Provost. Delta State University senior Benjamin Plongenet, juniors Thomas Pasquet and David Voravongsa along with sophomore Rafael Weigard were named to the 2006 All-Gulf South Conference tennis team on Tuesday. Pasquet, Voravongsa and Weigard were first team honorees while Plongenet picked up second team honors. Pasquet, a native of Aixen Provence, France, picks up his second straight first team mention. He helped the Statesmen reach the GSC semi’s while posting an 8-8 record. Voravongsa, ranked 42 nd in the county also gets his second straight first-team award. Last years GSC West Player of the Year, the native of Cannes, France finished the season with a 10-6 record, 7-2 in GSC action. Weigard picks up his first GSC first team mention. The sophomore native of Florianopolis, Brazil finished the year with a 9-6 singles mark with a 5-3 GSC record. Plongenet garners his first second-team mention. The senior from Nice, France posted a 5-3 singles record while helping the Statesmen to a semi-final appearance.
April 24, 2006 LADY STATESMEN FALL IN GSC CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIS HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team capped off a hard fought GSC season with a semi-final loss in the Gulf South Championships last weekend. The second seed in the West, DSU faced off against Lincoln Memorial. Helena Sokolva and Kathleen Rollet got the ball rolling for Lady Rail Splitters, 8-6 over Mindy Salas and Paula Uchida. The Lady Statesmen would claim victorious in the next two contests for a 2-1 overall lead. Lisa Ortolo and Helene Thalamy over Martina Haluskova and Lucia Hyzova 8-4 while Milena Araujo and Sophie Provost defeated Jennifer Pardo and Rachel Redmond 8-3. The Lady Statesmen would lose momentum in the first singles set as Paula Uchida dropped 6-0, 6-2 to Helena Sokolova. That would be the last point LMU would gain, as DSU picked up the last three sets for a 5-2 overall win. Mindy Salas defeated Kathleen Rollet, 6-3, 6-2, while Helene Thalamy and Sophie Provost cleaned up. West Florida , ranked third in the nation had only one thing in mind, a victory. UWF just outplayed the Lady Statesmen, sweeping doubles action quickly. Suzanna Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo led the way with an 8-3 victory over Mindy Salas and Paula Uchida. Tammy Kevey and Mandy Septoe defeated Lisa Ortolo and Helene Thalamy 8-1 while Anne Claire Beard and Tatiana Rodrigues cleaned up the doubles action, 8-3 over Milena Araujo and Sophie Provost. Mandy Septoe led the way in singles action, 6-1, 6-4 over Helene Thalamy while Anne Claire Beard won comfortably over Lisa Ortola 6-1, 6-2. April 24, 2006 STATESMEN SLIP UP IN SEMIS AT GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - The Delta State University men’s tennis team lost a heart breaker in the semi-finals of the Gulf South Championships. As the second seed in the West Division, the Statesmen paired up first with North Alabama in round one. The Lions were looking for a little redemption after their loss to DSU earlier in the year. Bruno Zuleta and Alfredo Krywacz wasited no time to start off the doubles action, defeating Justin Garnier and Kirill Pervoun 8-3. The Lions took the second match after a hard fought battle; Guilherme Fonseca and Wolfgang Weber over David Voravongsa and Benjamin Plongenet 9-7. The Statesmen would rally a win thanks to Thomas Pasquet and Rafael Weigard winning easily 8-2 over Bebo Dutton and Adam Loudermilk. David Voravongsa, who has been the backbone of this squad, led by example in the first match of singles competion, claiming a6-4, 6-1 victory over Guilherme Fonseca. The wins would alternate between to two schools before the Statesmen would claim the last two matches. Rafael Weigard had some struggles in the early going, eventully taking a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Bebo Dutton while Benjamin Plongenet let his racket talk the trash, winning in straight sets over Michael O’Brien 6-0, 6-2. Number one ranked Valdosta State smashed Christian Brothers in the quarter-finals 7-0 and were not ready to stop there. The Statesmen were looking to upset the Blazers on route to the finals. Christopher Schneider and Dominik Hansen grabbed the first win for the Blazers, 8-4 over Justin Garnier and Kirill Pervoun in the first game of doubles action. Leos Jelinek and Niko Overkemphing added a 2-0 advantage defeating David Voravongsa and Benjamin Plongenet 8-5. The Statesmen would get a little relief and some momentum in the pair of Thomas Pasquet and Rafael Weigard who won 8-3 over Chris Boyd and Thomas Provost. Unfortunately for the Statesmen, that momentum was halted quickly as the Blazers would sweep singles action. Kirill Pervoun over Leos Jelinek 6-4, 6-0 while Niko Overkemping slammed Thomas Pasquet 6-0-6-2. Dominik Hansen would take the sweep 6-2, 6-0 over Justin Garnier. April 19, 2006 DELTA STATE TENNIS CLAIMS KEY GSC MATCHES WITH HARDING UNIVERSITY BISONS SEARCY, ARK. - The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis teams claimed a pair of key Gulf South Conference matches on Tuesday at Bison Courts. The Statesmen, ranked No. 26 nationally and No. 4 regionally, defeated the Bisons 5-4. The Lady Statesmen, ranked No. 36 nationally and No. 5 regionally, dispatched Harding 6-3 in front of the home crowd. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will now set their sights on the GSC Tournament this Friday and Saturday in Huntsville, Ala. April 11, 2006 LADY STATESMEN RECORD TWO BIG GSC VICTORIES CLEVELAND- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team showed no love to Gulf South Conference rival Ouachita Baptist on Friday, shutting them out 9-0 in doubles and singles action. DSU, ranked 37 th in the nation, swept the doubles action with ease. Helene Thalamy and Lisa Ortola had no trouble with the team of Christy Gatzki and The Lady Statesmen continued their solid momentum into the singles action. Helene Thalamy won comfortably over Christy Gatzki 6-1, 6-2. Milena Araujo let her racket do the talking, 6-0, 6-0 over Whitney Noschell. Sophie Provost won easily 6-0, 6-0 while Adeline Pasternostre cleaned the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mary Gober. OBU was forced to forfeit the last two matches. Christian Brothers were next on the calendar for the Lady Statesmen as they looked to extend their run for a GSC championship. The Lady Bucs just didn’t have their game today as they fell 6-0 last Saturday. The victory puts the Lady Statesmen 13-5 on the year, 10-1 in GSC action. Helene Thalamy and Lisa Ortola continued their stunning doubles play as they won quickly over Janet Atkins and Michelle Bates 8-1. Sophie Provost and Milena Araujo made it a 2-0 run defeating the team of Kim Koerber and Susie Mohan 8-0. Claire Dean and Adeline Pasternostre picked up the sweep 8-0 over Natalie Jerden and Anastasia Domosheva. Success continued in singles action as the Lady Bucs could not find a rhythm to make any kind of a comeback. Helene Thalamy won 6-0, 6-0 over Janet Atkins while Milena Araujo took care of Michelle Bates 6-0, 6-0. CBU’s Kim Koerber did win a set over Lisa Ortola, but that was the closet she ever came, losing 6-1, 6-0. The Lady Statesmen must now get ready for the Gulf South Conference Championship in Huntsville, Ala, April 14.
March 29, 2006 LADY STATESMEN NETTERS RANKED NO. 37 IN LATEST FILA POLL CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen (10-3) tennis team received a No. 37 national ranking in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Top 40 Poll released March 26 by College Tennis Online. The Lady Statesmen were ranked in the March 10 poll, but have regained their national spot over the past few weeks. The Lady Statesmen swept a doubleheader with the University of West Alabama and Henderson State University on Friday and Saturday of last week. Delta State smashed West Alabama 9-0 and dismantled Henderson State 8-1. The Lady Statesmen return to action this weekend versus Christian Brothers University and the University of West Alabama on March 31. Delta State will also play over the weekend in the White Sands Tennis Classic in Pensacola, Fla. DSU will face fourth-ranked Barry University and fifteenth-ranked Georgia College and State University during the two day event. March 28, 2006 LADY STATESMEN SWEEP GSC WEEKEND CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen faced Henderson State University on Friday and the University of West Alabama on Saturday this past weekend in GSC tennis action. Friday proved to be a good day for the Lady Statesmen, as they took control of the Lady Reddies from the start. DSU proved victorious in every match except for the final singles match of the day. In Doubles action, Delta State swept HSU. In the first match Paula Uchida and Mindy Salas defeated HSU’s Melissa West and Megan Harness 8-0. Match two saw Lisa Ortola and Helena Thalamy of DSU defeat Lady Reddies Meier and Westerfield 8-5. The final match in doubles play once again was awarded to Delta State as Provost and Araujo defeated Kay and Pascucci of Henderson State by a score of 8-4. In singles play Delta State once again took charge as they took five of six matches from the Lady Reddies. In the first match, Paula Uchida defeated HSU’s Melissa West 6-2, 6-2. Mindy Salas defeated Tara Meier of Henderson State 6-4, 6-1 in No.2 singles. In match three the lady Statesmen once again took the match as Helena Thalamy defeated Kaitlin Pascucci of HSU in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Match four and five also went to Delta State as DSU’s Milena Araujo defeated Shelley Westerfield of HSU6-1, 6-0 and in match five Lisa Ortola of the Lady Statesmen defeated Meggie Kay 6-2, 6-0. In match six DSU’s Adeline Pasternostre Fell to Megan harness of the Lady Reddies 6-1, 6-3. On Saturday, The Lady Statesmen faced the University of West Alabama Lady Tigers. The Lady Statesmen showed up ready to play as they swept UWA in every match of the day. In doubles play, DSU’s Uchida and Salas defeated Cole and Clerch of UWA 8-2. Match two saw Lady Statesmen Aravjo and Provost defeated Siby and Frazier of West Alabama 8-4. The third match had Thalamy and Pasternostre of DSU defeat Lady Tigers Mock and Hardaway by a score of 8-0. Singles action once again was all Delta State! In match one Lady Statesmen Paula Uchida defeated Adanys Clerch 6-3, 6-1. Match two had Mindy Salas of Delta State defeating UWA’s Amy Cole 6-1, 6-1. In the third match Milena Aravjo of DSU beat Lady Tiger Amy Frazier 6-3, 6-1. Lisa Ortola won match four for Delta state defeating Rama UWA’s Rama Siby 6-1, 6-1. Sophie Provost and Adeline Pasternostre won the final two matches to close out the sweep for DSU. In match five Provost defeated Rachel Hardaway 6-1, 6-0 and in match six Pasternostre of Delta State defeated West Alabama’s Melanie Mock 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets. After the weekend the Lady Statesmen improved to 10-3 on the season. The Lady Statesmen are back in action Tuesday, March 28 as they will face Christian Brothers University in Cleveland. March 14, 2006 LADY STATESMEN FALL TO SUGAR BEARS FAIRFIELD BAY, Ark. - The Delta State University women’s tennis team fell 5-3 in the fourth and final match in Fairfield Bay, AR. DSU fell to eight and three with the loss. Helene Thalamy picked up wins in both her singles and doubles matches for DSU. The Lady Statesmen will take the court on March 25 th as they take on Henderson State. LADY STATESMEN REEL OFF ANOTHER VICTORY FAIRFIELD BAY, Ark. - The Delta State University women’s tennis team defeated the Henderson State University Lady Reddie tennis team 8-2 in the third of their four matches in Fairfield Bay, AR. Paula Uchida and Mindy Salas continued to play well together, winning their number one doubles match by a score of 8-4. Singles winners for DSU included Mindy Salas, Helene Thalamy, Milena Araujo, Lisa Ortola, and Sophie Provost. DSU CRUSHES ATU FAIRFIELD BAY, Ark. - The Delta State University women’s tennis team proved to be a tough opponent today as they regrouped from the loss to Northeastern State to defeat Arkansas Tech 8-1 in Fairfield Bay, AR. The Lady Statesmen dominated nearly every match, only allowing dropping three games in three doubles matches, and were in control in five other singles contests. The DSU women are now 7-2 on the season. LADY STATESMEN FALL TO NORTHEASTERN STATE FAIRFIELD BAY, Ark. - The Delta State University women’s tennis team traveled to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas on Friday and dropped an 8-1 decision. “Most of the matches today were extremely close and could have gone either way.” “I’m proud of the way the ladies played today said DSU head coach Asa Atkinson.” Paula Uchida and Mindy Salas were winners in the number one doubles by a score of 9-8. The Lady Statesmen are now six and two on the season.
March 14, 2006 GOLDEN EAGLES TOO MUCH FOR STATESMEN HATTIESBURG - The Delta State University Statesmen traveled to Hattiesburg on Saturday as they faced the University of Southern Mississippi. Statesmen Rafael Weigand and Benjamin Plongenet captured one of three victories in doubles play with an 8-4 win over USM’s Mezey and Kohi. In singles action the Statesmen captured two victories from the Golden Eagles. In match one DSU’s David Varavongsa defeated Marc Lux in straight sets 7-6 and 6-4. Statesmen closed out singles play with DSU’s Benjamin Plongenet defeating John Kohi 7-6, 6-1. The Golden Eagles defeated the statesmen 5-2.
PENSACOLA, Fla. - On Sunday the Statesmen tennis team traveled to Pensacola, Fla. to play the West Florida Argonauts. In doubles play UWF won all three matches. The Statesmen had their chance in match two but Julien Becksteiner and Kirril Pervoon fell Short 8-5. In singles play the statesmen claimed their only match of the day as Jullian Becksteiner defeated Mrteuichie in the last match of the day. West Florida claimed the win 8-1.
HAMMOND, La. - On Monday, the Statesmen closed out their three school road trip as they played Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La. In doubles play, all three matches were canceled. In singles action, The Statesmen grabbed one victory as Rafael Wiegand defeated Ondrej Kaivka 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The Statesmen ended the day falling to SLU 1-5. February 23, 2006 STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN BLAST LEMOYNE-OWEN OFF COURTS IN MEMPHIS MEMPHIS, TENN. - The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis teams blasted LeMoyne-Owen University off the courts 9-0 and 9-0 on Thursday at Whitehaven Courts. "This was our best all-around performance of the year," said DSU head coach Asa Atkinson. "The men played great and the women were almost flawless. I was tremendously proud of them today!" The women wasted little time in dispatching Lemoyne-Owen from the court claiming all three doubles matches by a combined 24-1 score. DSU also swept all six singles matches. LO managed to win just two games during the entire match. The men faired about the same with a sweep of the doubles and singles slate. The Lady Statesmen improved to 4-0 on the year, while the Statesmen jumped to 1-3. DSU Women vs. LO Women Box Score February 14, 2006 DELTA STATE SPLITS A PAIR OF MATCHES AT ALCORN STATE IN LORMAN LORMAN - The 2006 season is finally underway! Mothernature had nothing to say about the Delta State -Alcorn State match on Tuesday. Both teams split the doubleheader with DSU climing the women's victory and ASU topping the men. In the women's match, the Lady Statesmen jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after singles play. Mindy Salas downed Stephania Guzman to take No.2 singles 6-2 and 6-4, while Helene Thalamy cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Martina Garda at No.3 singles. The Lady Statesmen were also able to sweep the three doubles matches with the Lady Braves to garner a 5-2 win to open the season. The men's match was a back-and-forth struggle between the two teams. ASU prevailed in the end 4-3. Benjamin Plonoget claimed No. 3 singles with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Marcos Hernandez. The Statesmen played with out All-GSc standout David Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet. February 7, 2006 STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN RESCHEDULE SEASON OPENERS CLEVELAND - Delta State University head tennis coach Asa Atkinson announced on Monday that the season opener, originally scheduled for last weekend, has been moved to Feb. 11 in Memphis, Tenn. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will square off against LeMoyne Owen College and Christian Brothers University to open the 2006 season. May 5, 2005DELTA STATE’S VORAVONGSA AND SALAS CLEVELAND – Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Tennis Coach Asa Atkinson announced Thursday that David Voravonga and Mindy Salas had been recognized as the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Players to Watch. The ITA recognizes one male and one female tennis player from each region each year that has yet to play in an NCAA Championship, but certainly has shown the potential. Voravongsa, a sophomore from Cannes, France, is currently ranked No. 8 by the ITA. He has compiled a 12-1 record on the season and partners with Thomas Pasquet to form the No. 12 doubles team in America. Voravongsa will lead the Statesmen into the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday, May 5 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla. Salas, a sophomore from Sao Paulo , Brazil , has played No. 3 singles for the Lady Statesmen all year and has amassed a record of 11-4. Salas and teammate Paula Uchida form the No.1 doubles tandem for the Lady Statesmen. She will lead the Lady Statesmen into the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday, May 5 at Valdosta State University in Valdosta , Ga.
April 19, 2005 DELTA STATE’S VORAVONGSA NAMED GSC WEST CLEVELAND – Delta State University sophomore David Voravongsa was named the Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis West Division Player of the Year Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. It is the second straight year a Statesman has taken home the honor. Alejandro Alvez won the award in 2004. Voravongsa, a sophomore from Cannes, France, has guided the No. 11 Statesmen to a second place finish in the GSC West and a semifinal berth in the GSC Championships this season. Voravongsa is ranked No. 8 nationally in singles and No. 12 in doubles with teammate Thomas Pasquet. The Cannes, France native has posted a stellar 10-1 record, while playing the No. 1 singles spot. Voravongsa also has excelled in doubles with Thomas Pasquet. The duo has compiled a 9-4 mark this season. He is also a nominee for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player to Watch Award and a candidate for ITA All-American. April 18, 2005DELTA STATE PLACES FOUR ON ALL-GSC CLEVELAND – Delta State University sophomores David Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet, junior Alexandre Nicolau and senior Alejandro Alvez were named to the 2005 All-Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Team Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. Voravongsa, Pasquet and Nicolau were first team selections, while Alvez was a second team choice. Voravongsa, a sophomore from Cannes, France, was also named the GSC West Player of the Year. He has helped guide the No. 11 Statesmen to a second place finish in the GSC West and a semifinal berth in the GSC Championships this season. Voravongsa is ranked No. 8 nationally in singles and No. 12 in doubles with teammate Thomas Pasquet. Pasquet is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation in doubles with Voravongsa. The Paris, France native has played No. 2 singles all season for the Statesmen. Pasquet was a second team selection and Freshman of the Year selection in 2004. Nicolau has been a solid player and contributor for the Statesmen this season. The Paris, France native is no stranger to this list. In 2004, he was a First Team All-GSC selection. Nicolau is also an All-American candidate. Alvez is the lone senior on the No. 11 Statesmen roster. The Sau Paulo, Brazil native was the 2004 GSC West Player of the Year and a First Team All-GSC selection. This season Alvez has played No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. Delta State University is currently awaiting the NCAA Regional selection process and will be making plans to attend the South Regional at a yet to be determined site. April 19, 2005 LADY STATESMEN PLACE FOUR ON ALL-GSC BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 24 Delta State University Lady Statesmen Tennis Team has placed four players on the 2005 All-Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Team announced Tuesday by the GSC Office in Birmingham, Ala. Natalie Dean and Paula Uchida, both sophomores on the squad, were named to the All-GSC First Team. Helene Thalamy and Mindy Salas were named to the All-GSC Second Team. Dean, a native of Palmerstown, New Zealand, played No. 1 singles for the Lady Statesmen this season. Dean recorded a 7-6 overall record and a 5-2 GSC mark for the Lady Statesmen. Uchida, a Sao Paulo, Brazil native, posted a 7-5 mark and a 5-2 GSC record this season. Dean teamed with Helene Thalamy for a 6-7 doubles record, while Uchida and Mindy Salas posted a stellar 11-5 record. Salas, a Carracas, Venezuela native, led the Lady Statesmen with an 11-5 singles record and a 7-1 mark in conference. Thalamy, a Nice, France native, went 9-3 on the season with an unblemished 6-0 GSC mark. The Lady Statesmen are currently awaiting the NCAA Regional selection process and are preparing to participate in the upcoming South Regional.

April 7, 2005DELTA STATE CLIMBS IN LATEST ITA POLL CLEVELAND – Success breeds success and the more you have the more recognition you receive. Quietly this season, the Delta State University Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams have risen to the ranks of the nation’s elite in collegiate tennis. In the latest College Tennis Online/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, Coach Asa Atkinson’s teams vaulted in the rankings. This week the No. 13 Statesmen (5-3) climbed five spots from last week’s No. 18 ranking. David Voravongsa, a sophomore from Cannes, France, leads the Statesmen with an 8-1 record and a No. 28 individual ranking. Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet are ranked No. 17 in doubles as well. After a slow start the Lady Statesmen are quickly rising in the rankings as well. This week DSU enters the poll at No. 24. That is a three position increase from last week’s No. 27 ranking. Mindy Salas (7-2), Natalie Dean, Paula Uchida and Helene Thalamy lead the way for the Lady Statesmen. The next rankings are due out next Tuesday. If Delta State can have continued success this weekend at Ouachita Baptist and Drury University we may see them climb even further next week. DSU and OBU square off on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Tiger Tennis Center. DSU and Drury will follow the OBU match.
NO. 13 STATESMEN SHELL BUCCANEERS 7-0 Memphis, Tenn. - The No. 13 Delta State University Statesmen (6-3) tennis team defeated the Christian Brothers University tennis team, 7-0, Tuesday at Buccaneer Courts. Thomas Pasquet defeated Matt Wiseman 4-2, retired at No. 1 singles. Alejandro Alvez, Rafael Weigard, Eduardo Knijnik and Daniel Kartsev all recorded singles wins for the Statesmen. April 4, 2005NO. 18 STATESMEN DROP TWO MATCHES ON THE COAST PENSACOLA, Fla. - The No. 18 Delta State University men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to two nationally-ranked clubs this weekend at the University of West Florida. On Friday, April 1, DSU lost a close contest to No. 1 West Florida 5-3 at University Courts in Pensacola, Fla. The highlight came on No. 28 David Voravonsa's straight-set, 6-3 and 7-6, win over UWF's No. 6 Paulius Jurkenas. Delta State also claimed the the No. 3 and No. 5 singles spots. Alexandre Nicolau defeated Mario Vergara 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 to win No. 3 singles, while Rafael Weigard took No. 4 for DSU with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Maxamiliano Graza. March 29, 2005No. 18 STATESMEN FALL TO BRAVES, WHILE No. 27 LADY STATESMEN CLAIM 5-2 WIN LORMAN - Tuesday afternoon proved to be bittersweet for Coach Asa Atkinson, as his DSU tennis team split a pair of matches with the Alcorn State University squad. The Statesmen (4-2) lost a close match 4-3, while the Lady Statesmen sent the Lady Braves packing 5-2 (7-2). The Lady Statesmen recorded singles victories at the No.1-No.5 spots with Natalie Dean, Paula Uchida, Mindy Salas, Helene Thalamy and Lisa Ortolo picking up wins. Salas and Uchida also combined to pick up Delta State's lone doubles win. The Statesmen struggled withe the Braves all afternoon, losing a close affair late. David Voravongsa, ranked No. 28 in America, recorded a singles win for the Statesmen. Fellow teammates Alexandre Nicolau and Alex Alvez also picked up singles victories, but it wasn't enough in th end. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to action this weekend on the Gulf Coast. The Lady Pacers fell to 12-5 on the season, while Delta State improved to 6-2 overall. The Pacers fell to 10-7 on the season, while Delta State improves to 4-1 overall. The visitors won two of the three doubles matches and four of six singles matches. February 6, 2005LADY BULLDOGS DROP AN ACE ON THE LADY STATESMEN 7-0 RUSTON , La. – The Louisiana Tech University Lady Bulldogs (1-0) downed the Delta State University Lady Statesmen (0-1) 7-0 yesterday in women’s tennis. It was the first event of the year for both teams. The Lady Statesmen lost the doubles match-up 3-0. Mindy Salas and Paula Uchida lost a close contest 9-7 to LaTech’s Monica Kelly and Aaril Martinez. The second doubles match was just as exciting at LaTech’s Holly Ready and Shararri Uriante’ defeated DSU’s Helene Thalamy and Natalie Dean 8-4. DSU was forced to forfeit the third doubles match. In singles action, LaTech won 6-0. In No. 1 singles LaTech’s Shararri Uriante’ defeated DSU’s Natalie Dean 6-1, 6-2. DSU’s Paula Uchida lost the No. 2 singles match to Monica Kelly 6-4, 6-0. Mindy Salas of DSU was narrowly defeated in No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3, while Helene Thalamy lost No.4 to LaTech’s Aanabelle Duque 6-1, 6-1. LaTech’s Aaril martinez claimed No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lisa Datolo. DSU was forced to forfeit the sixth singles match. “This was great learning experience for our ladies team,” stated DSU Head Coach Asa Atkinson . “Louisiana Tech is a solid Division I program and our ladies fought hard all day.”

Monday, April 19, 2004 WOMEN ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS, MEN FALL IN QUARTER-FINALS VALDOSTA, Ga., - In the 2004 Gulf South Conference women's tennis tournament, No. 17 Delta State University advanced to the semifinals after defeating Lincoln Memorial 5-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Lady Statesmen fell to No. 4 University of West Florida 5-1. The Lady Statesmen finished the season with a record of 18-7. SEMI-FINALS DELTA STATE 5, LINCOLN MEMORIAL 2 Doubles VALDOSTA, Ga., - In the 2004 Gulf South Conference men's tennis tournament (No.31) Delta State University lost to (No.31) Lincoln Memorial in the opening round, 5-4.
